Event Format and CYBATHLON Hubs

The CYBATHLON Challenges 2023 will be held decentrally at the teams' home institution and at the Zurich Hub in Switzerland set up by the CYBATHLON organisers.

Teams can decide whether they want to travel to the Zurich Hub and start there or set up their own team hub and participate remotely.

The Zurich Hub will be located in the region of Zurich, Switzerland. Detailed information on the location will follow later.

More information about how to set up a local hub can be found in the guidelines.

Disciplines and Tasks

For the CYBATHLON Challenges in March 2023 there will be races in the following disciplines:

Each race consist of two tasks per discipline from the CYBATHLON 2024 Races and Rules.

More information about the tasks of each disciplines can be found in the Challenges 2023 Races and Rules

Competition mode

Each team is given two trials (races) at the competition to solve the two tasks. The teams can watch each other compete in the live broadcast on the CYBATHLON website. After each team has finished their trials (races), the final ranking is determined.

We will hold a competition in a discipline even if only one team has registered. The team can demonstrate its technology, sets a first benchmark for the new tasks, and the audience is introduced to the new tasks by this team – or even to a new discipline (in case of the Vision Assistance Race and the Robot Assistance Race).
If this is the case, the team can decide after the registration deadline whether it wants to start or not.

Competition Infrastructure

Teams competiting from home must set up their own competition site. Some of the required competition material will be shipped to you by the CYBATHLON organisers, other material has to be provided by the teams. A detailed list of the required material for each task including the source of supply and instructions on how to build the infrastructure can be found in the Appendix of the Races and Rules CYBATHLON 2024.

See Appendix I Competition Infrastructure

Conditions of Participation

To participate in the CYBATHLON Challenges 2023, a full TecCheck (technical check of the device) and MedCheck medical check of the pilot) are mandatory, with which the eligibility criteria and the safety as stated in the CYBATHLON Races and Rules are verified.

Furthermore, teams must meet the deadlines listed below under "Important Dates and Deadlines".

Production and Live Stream

Teams participating from their own hub film their races themselves and send the video and audio signal to our production company. Filming with a cell phone on a gimbal is sufficient.

The competition will be procuded live. This means that according to a starting list, each team performs after the other in a live, virtual session. Teams can virtually follow the other teams’ races online. In contrast to the CYBATHLON Challenges last year in May 2022 the sessions will be broadcasted live.

More information about the dates and deadlines can be found in the Challenges Guidelines

Questions & Answers

Below you can find answers to the most frequently asked questions by team members:

Registration

  • Does my team need to be registered for the main event, the CYBATHLON 2024, to participate in the Challenges?

No, this is not a requirement

Teams can register and participate in the CYBATHLON Challenges regardless of their participation in  the CYBATHLON 2024.

The CYBATHLON Challenges offer development teams the opportunity to involve people with disabilities in their development process from the beginning and test their assistance systems in a competitive situation, with the goal of helping them prepare for participation in the CYBATHLON 2024.

  • Can I register my team although I do not have a confirmed pilot yet?

    Yes, you can

You can submit your team registration and secure your starting slot even if you don't have a confirmed pilot yet.

You should start the process of the pilot selection as early as possible to involve them in your team and the development process from the beginning.

In any case, teams must meet the deadlines for the medical check (pilot registration and Medcheck) for participation in the CYBATHLON Challenges.

  • Can I register my team although I do not have a functional prototyp yet?

    Yes, you can

You can submit your team registration and secure your starting slot even if you don't have a functional prototyp of your device yet.

The CYBATHLON organisers may request a virtual call with your team to gain more information about your project/technology and the status.

In any case, teams must meet the deadlines for the technical check (written TecCheck 1 and remote TecCheck 2) for participation in the CYBATHLON Challenge.

  • Can I register a backup pilot?

    Yes, that is possible

You can also register a backup pilot who takes the role of the pilot if the (primary) pilot drops out or withdraws from participation.

For the registration of a backup pilot, the same conditions apply as for the pilot registration.

  • Can register a team for more than one discipline?

    Yes, that is possible

You can register a team for more than one discipline. In this case, please register each team separately per discipline and then for the event.  Each team needs a unique team name (e.g. you can append the discipline abbreviations to your team name or add numbers, myTeam 1, myTeam 2...).

Event / Teams' Hub

  • What is happening at the Rehearsal day?

    Test session

The rehearsal day helps all of us to test the steps necessary for a smooth competition and production process. Please note that your pilot does not have to be present on the rehearsal day. Any team member can act as the pilot on this day.

  • Can I include branding of my team partners and sponsors at my local venue?

    Yes, that is allowed

Teams are allowed to include branding of team partners, i.e. sponsors supporting the team or the local organisation at the venue, but only beyond (outside) the racetracks. CYBATHLON provides material for branding the race infrastructure (partners of CYBATHLON, CYBATHLON branding) that the teams are obliged to attach. It is not allowed to place other branding on the race infrastructure or on the racetracks.

Teams are allowed to place branding on the device or clothes.

In any context of the event, it is not allowed to place branding of sponsors of industries such as tobacco, alcohol, eroticism, weapons, or military. In case of doubt, please contact the CYBATHLON organisers.

  • Do I need to look for a Referee and a Timekeeper at my team hub by myself?

    No, that is not requested

The recruiting of the CYBATHLON officials for a hub is organised by the CYBATHLON organisers together with the participating teams and their hub organisers.
