About the Team
“The polyarticulated myoelectric prosthetic hand Hannes multiSense allows our pilot to automatically adjust the grip to the shape of any object to be grasped." explains the mechatronics engineer and team manager Nicolò Boccardo. Team REHAB TECH will represent the joint laboratory Rehab Technologies founded by Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and the public accident insurance of Italy INAIL. Our team is comprised of experts from various disciplines, including robotics, biomechanics, and human-computer interaction. This diversity of expertise enables us to approach challenges from multiple angles, resulting in innovative solutions that surpass conventional boundaries. Through close collaboration with users and healthcare professionals, we ensure that our technology meets the evolving needs of the people we serve. The CYBATHLON 2024 Edition will be the second adventure for Hannes, which in the CYBATHLON 2020 Global Edition successfully placed in the first half of the final ranking. This time, a new and highly technological version of Hannes, now called Hannes multiSense, will be the protagonist, implementing new movements but maintaining a natural and anthropomorphic design.
About the Pilot
Driven by the fascination with technology and problem-solving that distinguished her from a young age, Chiara Storchi developed a keen interest in engineering, drawn to the idea of creating innovative solutions to complex problems. Despite being born without her right hand, Chiara refused to let her physical limitations define her. An example? Her biggest passion is playing basketball. She obtained her master’s degree in Mechatronics while navigating through almost all the basketball courts in the North of Italy, finding a balance between academic pursuits and physical exertion.
Since 2022 she has worked at IIT (Italian Institute of Technology) as a Software Engineer at the Rehab Technology Lab, she develops innovative frameworks for upper limb prosthetic control evaluation. "I'm proud and excited to participate in the CYBATHLON 2024 with our prosthesis Hannes multiSense and my amazing coworkers: every day I witness the effort and heart they put into their work to add new and useful features to our hand. Competition always allowed me to face and usually overcome my limits. I'm looking forward to challenging Hannes multiSense and myself."
About the Device
Hannes multiSense is a myoelectrically controlled hand prosthesis with surface EMGs, potentially equipped with an active opening and closing of the digits, thumb adduction/abduction, wrist pronation/supination and flexion/extension, with a specific motor for each active DoFs. As the previous model Hannes, an under-actuated mechanism is at the foundation of its functioning.
Hannes multiSense is a modular device and can be personalized in terms of joints, which can be active or passive. The solution REHAB TECH Pilot Chiara will use in the CYBATHLON 2024 edition will be a version of this modular device, capable of providing tactile/proprioceptive feedback.
