About the Team

Our team RobUST at HKUST Division of Integrative Systems and Design is dedicated to developing a companion mobile robot designed to assist wheelchair-bound individuals with disabilities. Our team comprises cross-disciplinary members from robotics to human-centred product designs with experiences competing in other international robotics competitions (e.g. DJI RoboMaster and RoboSoft).

This project emphasises a human-centred co-design approach, meaning that we will work closely with the pilot and other potential pilots to tailor RobUST to their specific needs and preferences. Our goal is to create a device that not only meets functional requirements but also enhances the user experience.

About the Pilot

We are thrilled to partner with Ms. Ho Yuen Kei, an accomplished Boccia paralympic gold medalist, to pilot RobUST in this competition.

About the Device

RobUST is a companion robot designed to be controlled by a disabled pilot through intuitive input controls and a degree of autonomy allowing it to tackle the tasks that arise during activities of daily living. RobUST can be operated by the pilot on a wheelchair with basic navigational capabilities. Sensors will be fitted to support robotic arm control. The end-effector can be customized in the future to include other grippers (including soft grippers) that can manipulate different objects during task execution.in
